What's the Difference Between Cedar and Pine?

by Gwyneth Egan 22 Jul 2022 1 comment

If you’re looking for rustic wood furniture to decorate your home or cottage, you’ve come to the right place. At Log Furniture and More, that’s our specialty!

As our name would suggest, we have loads of variety when it comes to wood furniture. If you’re wondering how to pick the right wood furniture for your home, keep reading!

Rustic Wood Interior Design

Wood furniture helps create a rustic look, whether you decide to take a traditional or modern approach. Natural materials, like wood, can bring warmth, coziness, and texture into your living space.

When choosing wood furniture, it’s important to consider the material it’s made from, as it can influence how your furniture looks and feels. Two commonly used materials for wood furniture are cedar and pine, and they can have different effects when it comes to rustic interior design.

Difference Between Pine and Cedar Wood

Cedar and pine are common materials for wood furniture, but what’s the difference between cedar and pine?

Pine and cedar are both softwoods, but cedar is a tougher variety. While both can be used for furniture and interior decorating, cedar’s durability, as well as its rot- and pest-resistance, gives it a leg up when it comes to outdoor/patio furniture.

The cost of pine vs cedar is another relevant consideration. Pine tends to be less expensive than cedar, but they are generally comparable. With furniture, it’s important to remember that you are also paying for craftsmanship, not just the raw materials, so there may be fluctuations in price.

Pine and cedar wood also differ in colour. Pine tends to have a lighter colour that ranges from white to golden to cream. Cedar tends to have a warmer and richer colour that is often described as having a reddish tint. Although wood has its own natural colour, you can alter it to suit your own tastes by selecting a finish for the wood’s surface.

Examples

Log Furniture and More carries both cedar and pine furniture. We even have some pieces that combine the two. To help give you a better idea of the differences between cedar and pine, here are some examples.

If you have cedar fever, the Mountain Lodge Collection uses as much round cedar as possible.

If you’re pining for pine, the Heritage River Collection uses all pine.

If you like the look of both, the Rocky Valley Collection is the best of both worlds, featuring cedar with flat pine accents.

Is Wood Furniture Sustainable?

It’s always a good idea to do your research before investing in furniture. A company should be transparent about its sustainability practices and make them easily available to customers. Look for certifications from organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Rainforest Alliance, which help consumers identify products that are sourced and produced responsibly. Plus, buying from a responsible company that produces high quality goods means that your furniture can last a lifetime!

Does Cedar have any effects on clothes storage on long term, such as stains on white and light colour clothes?
